A pair of stilts is made up of two wooden parts: the “escasse”, which means leg in the local Landes dialect (this is where the word échasse—stilt—comes from), and the “paouse pé”, meaning footrest.
The paouse pé is attached to the escasse, usually at a height between 90 cm and 1.20 m (about 3 to 4 feet).
The stilt walker fastens their leg just below the knee, and their foot, to the stilt using two leather straps.
